Be careful of a drug called Crestor. In Washington D.C., an article was recently published that says that AstraZeneca’s cholesterol pill Crestor lowers the risk of heart attack, death and stroke in patients, but they still have fears that it may cause other problems. The FDA recently found that it is effective in helping people who need to keep their cholesterol down, but it has been found that people taking Crestor have a higher rate of diabetes.
There is some room for error in this study because most people who are overweight in their adult years have a higher chance of developing insulin resistance and getting diabetes. So, although people taking Crestor have a higher rate of diabetes, most likely they are taking Crestor to help the other problems that can come before diabetes like heart disease, stroke and other problems that are associated with diabetes. It would be necessary for them to do tests on patients before they take the drug and then afterwards to see if Crestor does something to trigger insulin resistance. The article can be found here.
