Researchers in Paris, France have noticed that there is a high number of triglycerides with patients that have type II diabetes. Being too high in triglycerides has a significant correlation to heart disease. There is a great need for people, especially those being affected by diabetes to consumer more fish oils.

Fish oils have helped many animals stop the resistance to insulin. It is very helpful for people to use fish oils in their cooking compared to any other oil. There was a study done in Italy that showed that there was a significant drop in triglyceride concentration by 45%, a 47% drop in the VLDL cholesterol levels and a 14% drop in LDL cholesterol levels after taking 3 fish capsules every day for 3 weeks.

A study shown in Norway showed that there were significant signs of reducing the risk of atherosclerosis caused by diabetes. It can lower your blood pressure and helps your smooth muscle cells to grow on arterial walls.

It would be very helpful for everyone to consume more fish or at least use fish oil more in your cooking. Some may say that they don’t like the taste of fish, but isn’t it worth it to prevent diseases?

The info can be found here…

Be careful of a drug called Crestor. In Washington D.C., an article was recently published that says that AstraZeneca’s cholesterol pill Crestor lowers the risk of heart attack, death and stroke in patients, but they still have fears that it may cause other problems. The FDA recently found that it is effective in helping people who need to keep their cholesterol down, but it has been found that people taking Crestor have a higher rate of diabetes.

There is some room for error in this study because most people who are overweight in their adult years have a higher chance of developing insulin resistance and getting diabetes. So, although people taking Crestor have a higher rate of diabetes, most likely they are taking Crestor to help the other problems that can come before diabetes like heart disease, stroke and other problems that are associated with diabetes. It would be necessary for them to do tests on patients before they take the drug and then afterwards to see if Crestor does something to trigger insulin resistance. The article can be found here.

An article by Don Thompson in the San Francisco Chronicle shows that people need to do some homework before they donate to any fundraisers. The Attorney General of California warned that the money that people donate may never reach the fundraiser that they would like to donate to. Professional fundraising firms are keeping more than half of the charitable donations that they receive.

He said this, “The firms raised $356 million in cash contributions last year but gave charitable organizations less than 44 percent of the money. They kept the rest for fees and expenses.”

So interesting. Why use a professional firm if you don’t get the money that was donated? Is the rest really for fees and expenses, or are these “non-profit” organizations turning a profit?

“American Diabetes Association Research Foundation lost more than $1 million to Futuremarket Telecenter Inc. of Corpus Christi, Texas, according to the report. That was an improvement from 2007, when the Virginia-based charity lost nearly $4 million using the same fundraiser.”

It seems unfair that people are donating this money for the purpose of blessing lives, but people feel it necessary to take from the poor and sick so that they can pay for “fees and expenses.” Are these fees and expenses perhaps their car and house expenses?

The article can be found here.

There is a website called Cell Science that lists all of the diabetes charities and support throughout the world. First it has a list of all of the charities that are International. It has stars next to each charity. I am guessing that the more stars, the better. The only one that I have heard of is TuDiabetes. They say that this site has outstanding design. The next list is a list of Community sites that can lead you to find some support or help for diabetes. There are multiple that I have heard of and many that seem really sketchy.

Then they have a list of all of the charities from Africa to the United Kingdom, not including the United States. The countries that have the most are the United Kingdom and Australia with 12. The next most are Canada and Germany. What is interesting is that neither China nor India have any websites whatsoever and they are the world’s leaders in persons with diabetes. You would think that they would support all of those people, but who knows what their health care plans are like, so maybe they don’t need them.

Next, there is a list of all of the National, individual State charities and some regional charities in the United States. There is no charity or organization that receives over 3 stars, so that must mean that they are all pretty even as far as how effective they are.

So, next time you are doing a charity drive or something, take into consideration all of the charities that are available to donate to. The website is http://cellscience.com/DIACharities.html

The Gerson Lehman Group has stated that currently, the onslaught of diabetes is one of the nation’s most pressing health challenges. Type II diabetes has become such a problem and is stressing the medical care system so much that it will most likely cause many heart problems as well. They say that lifestyle changes must play the central role in type II diabetes prevention and treatment.

The insulin resistance that is occurring in so many adults is due to inactivity and poor eating habits by adults. The majority of the time, it is taught to young adults or children and continues to be a problem throughout their lives. People are not doing enough for themselves to better their lives. It is necessary we each take a good, long look in the mirror and make a plan for ourselves. This is a great opportunity with New Years coming around. Lets all make a New Years resolution to better our lives. Please try to make it more than a New Year’s resolution, but a Life’s resolution to change your whole life so that you are not found later regretting eating those extra snacks or getting that burger when you could have had something more healthy.

It is possible to normalize our bodies through proper exercise and diet. Most importantly, we need to watch the amount of sugars that we ingest. Too much glucose accompanied with lack of activity causes insulin resistance. This can cause you to have type II diabetes and many health problems.

There is an article by Alaric DeArment on the drug store news website that says that there was a recent study done that shows that the type II diabetes gene found to predict diabetes in adults also predicts obesity in children. He found the article published online in the Diabetes Journal on Nov. 23.

What they are saying is that the researchers at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine think that by finding this gene, it may help to be able to fight or prevent type II diabetes by developing drugs that will help them.

The study was done on 7,200 white children from 2 to 18 years, testing certain genes to be able to find the ones associated with type II diabetes. This gene does not affect birth weight and does not predispose anyone to obesity in adulthood and it only accounts for a small portion of people who may have the diabetes risk.

They are now able to see that young bodies, because of this gene, and because of body size, are developing a resistance to insulin, which later causes type II diabetes. Seeing this helps to hopefully prevent diabetes completely later in life.

It is so amazing how many things are being discovered and understood and changed because of technology. Life can be so difficult for people with diseases and this is one of those things that can be changed because we have technology and we are learning how to use it.

Have you ever typed in “Diabetes” into google? There are tons and tons and tons of websites available. The information on this disease is so available it is amazing. There are tons and tons groups, websites, journals, blogs and so many different ways of finding help and support.

Although there are both pros and cons to current health care, it seems that not enough is being done for those who are in desperate need. The information available today helps get people more proactive about being healthy and taking care of their problems, but it can also be very overwhelming. It is needful for people with diabetes to find some type of support group so that they can talk about what is being done and what needs to be done. If they find enough people who the run across with similar problems, then they can really make a difference and get the ball rolling so that they can get the help they need, when they need it. The stress on people like Chris (from other posts) of having to go to and from the hospital makes diabetes so much more difficult. He goes so early and then so late. It is sad that he never has the time that he would like to be able to get the rest he needs so that his body can get itself better.

An interview with Dad, Continued….

Son : What is the most difficult part about having diabetes?

Dad : Now, it’s the infections. I have to go through such a rigamaroll to get through it because right now I’m going twice a day for IV infusions, so we have to get up at 630 and be there at 8 and then be there again at 8pm and we don’t get back until 930 and it’s just a huge ordeal.

Son : Did you ever worry that your kids or grand-kids would have it?

Dad : I knew pretty early that it usually skips a generation because my grandmother had it and Dad didn’t have it and then I got it. I figured that my kids wouldn’t get it, but I thought that if my grandkids got it we would be able to deal with it, but if my kids got it, I was prepared to help in any way I could.

Son : What did you think when your kidneys started failing?

Dad : well, I knew that that was always a possibility and I always looked at it like, whatever happens I just have to try and deal with it on a daily basis. I just tried to keep the attitude that whenever things started coming up that were caused by it I just tried to do the best I could. When it first happened, I had a doctor that was really knowledgeable and he said that we should try for a transplant and that would give us more options to get through this.

Son : Were you scared?

Dad : I don’t think so. All of these things that were happening were really interesting and I feel like these things and becoming more educated with all the pamphlets and things really helped me to be able to cope with them, because I was informed. I feel like knowledge of these things and having good doctors kept me free from fear and helped me cope.

Son : What’s the most difficult part now as a middle-aged man who has lived with diabetes for so long?

Son : Lately I have been thinking that I may not be here after five years. They say that when you are on dialysis, the life expectancy is about five to eight years. Those are the things that I have to think about.

Son : Who was your biggest inspiration growing up?

Dad : I’d say my dad. He’s always been very willing to help in any way he could. He and mom flew in when I had that transplant and really helped your mom got through it. They took you kids to Disneyland and even now he’s very willing to help Tammy and he’s been taking me to some doctor’s appointments and he’s always been a big cheerleader and always does what he can to help.

Son : Any words of advice would you give a young or newly diagnosed person?

Dad : Keep your blood sugar down. Test your blood 3-4 times a day and keep those blood sugars down and they will live a long and happy life. Blood sugar is a lot easier to control now. Before we had to urinate on a test tapes and those were not accurate at all. We didn’t have any way to test our blood until about the 90’s and now there are so many more brands of glucose monitors that it’s really a lot easier to control.

Son : Thanks, dad.

Dad : You’re welcome.

Chris is a middle-aged American that lives in Idaho and was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 14. He owns his own blinds business and has been on and off of disability for the past few years. His kidneys are failing and he is trying to get his body healthy enough to get his second kidney transplant so that he will recover from the complications that are associated with diabetes.

One of the biggest fears of children and family members is that their parents will die. They want to know that their parents aren’t scared and are trying to keep going forward. Here is a real interview that gives an insight into the life of Chris.

Son : Dad, When did you first think that something might be wrong?

Dad : My parents said that I was at first acting really sluggish. I remember that I was eating, but I was losing weight. I was starving and I was always hungry and I was going to the bathroom a lot. I felt like I wasn’t getting any food but I was eating a ton. My mom had a urine test tape and I had to go on it and it came back positive.

Son : What did you do?

Dad : Mom set an appointment with the doctor and their tests came back positive.

Son : What tests did the doctors do to test to see if you had it?

Dad : I think they just did blood tests.

Son : What went through your mind when you found out that you had it?

Dad : umm, I didn’t really think it was a big deal. I mean, knowing what it was…it was causing me to lose weight and I was going to the bathroom a lot. I was just relieved that we found out what it was and we could put a name to it. At the time, there were only certain medications and so I had to give myself injections. They actually put me in a hospital for about 5 days and they had doctors and dieticians and they kind of taught me about diabetes and how to control. I was only 14. Everyday they would give me pamphlets to read and we would talk about what was in the pamphlet and how I could control my diabetes.

Son : Was high school normal for you?

Dad : Yeah, it was pretty minor for me. I still ate the foods that I liked and once a week I would get a piece of cake and it didn’t affect what I actually did. I probably could have controlled my blood sugar better but I did the best I could.

Son : What was your biggest fear?

Dad : I might have thought about getting and giving myself a bunch of shots, but I think that once I started taking and getting used to them, it wasn’t that big of a deal. At first, when I thought about it, it made me a little uncomfortable. I didn’t have any future fears because I didn’t know what health issues would come. I think the doctor and the dietician may have explained that there’s complications that come from diabetes, but I didn’t really focus on those.

Son : Do you feel like your life has been normal since you were diagnosed?

Dad : Well, I haven’t really worried about it. I just would try and get through each day. It’s a daily trial. I watch my diabetes more closely now and try and keep the blood sugar down, but looking at the long-term effects, I could put myself in bed every day just worrying about the possible effects of diabetes, but I just get up and do the best I can.
